Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then found many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state early analysis indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure said the incident rendered him speechless and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
