In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
