The star has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 honor prize money to the MVT, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

He was awarded the prize on mid-October as his new release People Watching was named the best record of the previous year.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role local spots played in his initial steps.

"I personally would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

Fender also took part, raising over £100k on his live tour to help thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped locations that were dealing with potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Other venues obtained funding support in upgrading infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The idea that revenue from shows in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it begins for artists like me, is just logical," Fender has said.

He is not the first artist to give his honor prize money to good deeds.

Back when Pulp earned the trophy in 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman Cocker stated that the act would donate their winnings to the charity the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist split her bounty between a few charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," the artist shared with outlets.

Previously, the band donated their prize money to the youth organization that supported their act, as well as other local music groups.

And winners that year M People contributed their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said artist the singer. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected another person's life."

Recently, the trust announced it had rescued several small stages in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

One venue in Southampton and the other in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is funded by the arts council and supporters who buy "stakes" in the venues.
