Our Leading Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Premier Spot.

Initially, this work could seem more like a difficult academic quiz than a new popular music record by a musician whose previous hit featured a global K-pop icon. Divided into 4 separate movements and sung in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album exploring female mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the prism of different female saints. The end of a romance—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is shot heavenward here, carried by the lush presence of a major orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among a long roll call of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the work of contemporary pop stars appear quite small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That Lux manages to transcend dry intellectual posturing feels almost a miracle, with sole credit belonging to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to alchemize the past and modern styles, its stakes are much higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What really raises this fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Much like the legendary Björk during her height, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener into its tornado. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This playful spirit comes forth brightly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Then, all the music drops away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment before a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in with cartoonish impact. The song immediately shifts to the wild single driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from none other than herself.

"The charm with Lux lies in the listener never quite understand—or even wish to predict—where it will go to next."

Almost each song ends in a completely different point from where it began. One moment examines the fleeting nature of fame over a delicate orchestration only to collapsing into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused style begins out dark and sinister, with menacing beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic choir enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of the album is navigating the gap between radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song sung primarily in English builds on a chorus that seems to gather more and more infectious melodies as it spirals skyward. That trick gets echoed by a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for high artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a lavish banquet where the guests at the table, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
